The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has served as the civilian, non-
Today, the Auxiliary has members in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. The 35,000 volunteer women and men of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are active on the waterways and classrooms across the nation.
Each year, Auxiliarists save almost 500 lives and assist some 15,000 boaters in distress. Auxiliarists also conduct more than 150,000 courtesy safety examinations of recreational vessels.
Furthermore, members also taught over 500,000 students in boating and water safety courses and helped to protect our valuable marine resources.
On October 19, 1996 Congress greatly increased the responsibilities and training of the Auxiliary. The intent of Congress was to expand the ability of the Coast Guard to utilize Auxiliary Coast Guard units and members for missions not contemplated in 1939. The Coast Guard Authorization Act increased the scope of the Auxiliary's duties to include any role, mission, or operation that the Commandant of the Coast Guard might envision.
